<image:title>News - ODF Retirees Explore Restored Shellburg Falls - At Fern Hill, ODF’s Assistant to the Area Director, Robbie Lefebvre, shared insights into the Department’s ongoing work to replant the Santiam State Forest following the devastating fires. The group then continued to Shellburg Falls, where Joe Offer, ODF’s Recreation, Education, and Interpretation (REI) Program Manager, described how his team manages the recreation area and the extensive effort to restore trails and visitor amenities. Over lunch, volunteers Tom Brauner and Nelson Kline from Trailkeepers of Oregon spoke about their thousands of hours leading volunteer crews to rebuild trails, install bridges, and reestablish public access to this beloved area.</image:title>

<image:title>News - ODF Retirees Explore Restored Shellburg Falls - After three years as Executive Director of the State Forests Trust of Oregon (SFTO), Kelly Lau is retiring. During her tenure, Kelly helped strengthen partnerships, engage new supporters, and raise awareness of the vital role Oregon’s state forests play in recreation and education. “The best part of the Trust is the community of people who support the work of ODF’s Recreation, Education & Interpretation Program,” says Kelly. “I look forward to spending more time on the state forest trails - hiking, volunteering, foraging and more!”</image:title>

<image:title>News - ODF Retirees Explore Restored Shellburg Falls - Work on the Wilson River Trail Segment D extension has entered a new phase thanks to a grant from Tillamook Coast Visitors Association. This grant enables Northwest Trail Alliance (NWTA) to tackle one of the most challenging sections with their Single Track trail machine. SFTO Board Chair, Barrett Brown, is lending his time and expertise to operate the excavator to accelerate the build. Once the machine work is complete, volunteer crews from Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) will be able to bench and finish this portion using hand tools. The partnership between ODF, TKO, NWTA, and SFTO highlights the power of collaboration in expanding recreation opportunities on Oregon’s state forests. Click below to get involved!</image:title>

During each week-long session kids connect with nature and each other, building friendships, respect for living things, and a sense of belonging. "Many participants are the only BIPOC students in their class and experience isolation or bullying," says Pamela. "The program creates safe spaces where they can learn, explore, and develop outdoor skills—from identifying wildlife tracks to understanding the ecological role of a fallen elk."</image:caption>

"It's a big deal that the Trust was invited to participate in the program." says Rick. “It’s important that the youth physically get out into natural spaces. Real experiences can’t be replaced by watching a video." He sees the partnership as tangible, meaningful work that opens doors to forestry and the outdoors while strengthening communities. "Many families face real barriers to natural areas so programs like this enable youth to focus their connection and knowledge about nature to what is in front of them.” Pamela says,</image:caption>

Typically, you can find us hiking moderately challenging trails, fishing all the secret hot spots, and camping during what many would consider the 'off season'. Winter camping allows for access to the BEST sites, the ones that are usually very popular in the summer. When we are not recreating, we love to make meals together, watch movies, and play with our two cats, Bubba and Jax.</image:caption>

Now, I know that sounds crazy but stay with me. Folks will hang oversized googly eyes and cardboard smiles on the most unassuming trees. Sometimes they will even get crafty and use paper plates or brown paper bags to create full, expressive faces! It always makes me giggle when I run into them unexpectedly.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - When Nature Calls, We Answer - Tucked into the Santiam State Forest near Lyons, Oregon, the Natural Rock Arch Trail offers a short but steep hike to one of the area’s most striking geological features—a 50-foot tall, 40-foot wide natural arch. This dramatic formation was revealed after the 1951 Sardine Creek Fire cleared the hillside, and the area was later impacted by the 2020 Beachie Creek Fire. The 0.7-mileout-and-back trail begins just behind the trailhead sign, climbing through switchbacks. After crossing a scree slope, hikers descend a series of steep switchbacks—some aided by stone steps that replace the wood ones destroyed in the 2020 fire—before a short</image:title>

<image:caption>“With Rudy I can go places I wouldn’t get to on my own.” For over 12 years, they’ve navigated trails across Oregon and Washington. Their first visit to Santiam Horse Camp in 2010 made a lasting impression. "This place has amazing trails,” says Dave. With 10 miles of trails across diverse landscape and nearly always available corrals, Santiam Horse Camp is an are a favorite. Up until this year, Oregon Equestrian Trails Silver Falls Chapter members would come up on weekends to help greet visitors and look after the campground. This year, Dave decided to give back by becoming the facility’s dedicated camp host.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In essence, that’s the origin story–the roots of today’s State Forests Trust of Oregon trace back that quarter century to the formation of the Tillamook Forest Heritage Trust. Those four words in that initial organization name were chosen deliberately to signify this new effort focused on sharing the Tillamook, its resilience and complex history, and the inheritance its many values represent for the future, combined with the steadiness of a special public-private partnership. The Trust grew into a capable partner to the Oregon Department of Forestry that energized interest and support for sharing the story and the experience of the Tillamook State Forest.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - 25 Years of Giving</image:title>
<image:caption>During those early years, we traveled statewide listening to people describe their own connections with the Tillamook State Forest, whether as woods workers, tree planters, hunters and fishers, motorcyclists, hikers or neighbors. The experience of the Burn and the reforestation touched so many lives and the forest was so much a part of its surrounding communities. People felt a strong connection, and pride, about being part of something much bigger than themselves.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chad Brown, award winning documentary-style portrait and adventure photographer, outdoor enthusiast and Navy veteran reflected on the importance of the exhibit during the panel discussion. "My work behind the camera is just trying to create that platform and be able to inspire people to pursue the outdoors without fear, in a space of love." Chad shared his experience of connecting people to nature and the transformation that occurs. "There's an ah-hah moment in the healing that comes from time in nature. You see it and you feel it, and then you become this advocate of that environment. People realize 'I need to protect this, because this is what has healed me'."</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Meet Trustee Michael Langley - I never gave much thought to being poor growing up because of the richness of my experiences with my family. I also knew how hard and poor my father and grandfather really had it on the reservation in Grand Ronde, living without running water and having to haul water for bathing. My father always respected this experience, and now I do as well, turning the shower head on/off as needed rather than letting it selfishly run down the drain.</image:title>

      <image:title>News - Meet Trustee Michael Langley - Upcoming: 'Roots' Exhibit May 18-September 8, 2024</image:title>
<image:caption>Recognizing the often overlooked history, the 'Roots' exhibit, commissioned by the State Forest Trust of Oregon in partnership with the Oregon Department of Forestry, sheds light on the rich tradition of outdoor recreation among Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities in the United States. Despite historical challenges, BIPOC individuals have long found joy and healing in outdoor spaces. Through highlighting their stories, the exhibit aims to provide greater recognition and exposure to BIPOC outdoor recreationists who have achieved significant milestones, enriching our understanding of outdoor recreation's diverse history and present-day impact. Join a special presentation on June 15, 1 PM at the Center with the exhibit's creator, Chad Brown, and the BIPOC leaders he featured: Pamela Slaughter, Brian Chou, and Mercy M'fon.</image:caption>
